The Sydney Roosters have informed high-profile recruit Dom Young that he is free to negotiate and join rival clubs immediately despite over two years left to run on his contract.
Young joined the Roosters from the Newcastle Knights in 2024 on a four-year deal worth an estimated $2 million. Despite an impressive 25 tries in 29 matches with the tri-colours, the English international has fallen out of favour with coach Trent Robinson who has opted to play Mark Nawaqanitawase, Robert Toia and Billy Smith.
The Daily Telegraph’s David Riccio believes Young’s most likely destination is a return to the Newcastle Knights.
“The drum’s have been beating for over a week now surrounding Dom Young’s future at the Roosters,” Riccio told SEN 1170 Breakfast.
“The Newcastle Knights, his original club, could possibly be a landing spot.
“The Roosters have given him permission to leave the club and leave the club immediately before the June 30 deadline.
“I anticipate this will escalate quite quickly and the Knights will do everything in their power to make way for Dom Young to come back to the club.
“The Knights are standing firm at this point in time and saying they are only going to do a deal that will work for them.
“Young is a winger and it will squeeze a Knights winger out. My understanding is that it’s James Schiller who is under the most amount of pressure.
“We will start to see some dominoes fall.”
Young initially played in the UK Super League for the Huddersfield Giants before he joined the NRL with Newcastle in 2021. Young has also been a stalwart in the England national team and was a prominent figure in their most recent World Cup campaign.
SEN’s Andrew Voss has not ruled a Super League team making a play for Dom Young.
“An English club would put their hand up in a heartbeat if Dom Young wanted to go back to England,” Voss said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.
“What I’ve experience over there in the UK when I’ve been is that Dom Young is as big as anyone.
“He can sell the game over there. He’s got the looks, he’s flashy and scores plenty of tries for England.
“The Roosters have to pay him the next couple of years. It’s in the salary cap.”
Young’s last game for the Roosters was in Round 7 in a 40-12 loss to the Penrith Panthers.
He has been named in the Roosters’ NSW Cup side who will take on Manly’s reserve grade side at Scully Park in Tamworth on Sunday.
