"Olympic legacy would inspire a netball generation"
Netball securing a spot on the roster for the 202 Brisbane Olympic Games will prove invaluable to ensuring young boys and girls remain in the sport, according to one Diamonds star.
Over 100,000 people have already signed a petition to see netball added to the list of sports for the home Olympics in six years’ time, and Thunderbirds star Georgie Horjus believes the legacy it would leave will inspire a generation.
The sport has never been included in the Olympic or Paralympic program despite being recognised by the IOC since 1995.
That could all change with the IOC makes a ruling on which sports to add to the Brisbane edition of the Games.
“Netball put the bid in and now we wait,” Horjus told SENSA. “Over 100k have signed it and so much support from Australia. But this is a worldwide sport, more than 100 countries watch it and millions play it. It’s a massive sport for boys and girls. It would be awesome to see it in the Olympics
“It’s something we all want to do. We have a lot of young girls in the team so a lot of us will have the opportunity to play in the Olympics if this happens.
“The Olympic committee will decide. We have signed the pledge so it’s up to them now to pick the sports they want.
“Having it in Australia pushes out bid even more. We know we would get such a great crowd there so hopefully that helps us get this over the line.
“Growing up watching the Olympics, it’s something you love watching as a kid and aspire to be. Having it in the Olympics will push netball and help so many continue to play.”
The possibility of netball being an Olympic sport is not lost on any of the current talent in the SSN league.
While she will likely have hung up her bib come 2032, Vixens and Diamonds star Kate Moloney has called for fans of the sport to get behind the bid.
Speaking to SEN ahead of this weekend’s Vixens-Mavericks Melbourne derby, she said:
“There is so much going on behind the scenes, but we need people to get behind the bid. We are bias, we think our sports deserves to be there.
“Enough countries are playing and we want to showcase netball. It’s such a growth sport here.
“The men’s competition is growing so much. We practice against the male sides and it’s a growing space.”
