Gaze makes big call on potential Mills' homecoming
Throughout the last 18 years, Patty Mills has become one of the most well known Australian sports stars.
From being the only Australian to have played 1,000+ NBA games or taking the Boomers to their best finishes in the Olympics (3rd in 2020) and FIBA World Cup (4th in 2019), the guard has had one of the most decorated careers in Australian basketball.
And now, the former NBA champion is reportedly on the verge of returning home to play professionally, according to Australian basketball legend and SEN's Andrew Gaze.
After spending 16 seasons in the NBA, during which he represented seven teams, Mills was left to look overseas for playing opportunities after going unsigned.
Following his first season out of the NBA since 2009, the Olympic bronze medallist was appointed as General Manager of the University of Hawai’i’s men's basketball side.
The guard is also playing for Spanish side CB Canarias (also known as La Laguna Tenerife), where he leads the team for points per game (17.3) after four games.
But the seven-time NBL MVP has it on good authority that Mills is set for a homecoming with the Brisbane Bullets.
“A little birdie has given me some information,” Gaze told SEN’s The Run Home with Andy and Gazey.
“And it's that Patty Mills, (who’s) currently playing in Spain cause he never got picked up in the NBA…next year he will be returning to the NBL.
“And the birdie said that he’ll be playing for the Brisbane Bullets next season.”
Should Mills sign with the Bullets, it would mark his second stint in the competition.
Previously, the 37-year-old played for the Melbourne Tigers (now Melbourne United) for a nine-game stint during the 2011 NBA lockout.
During that time, he averaged 18.6 points, five assists and 2.3 assists.
Prior to this, Mills had been linked to joining a proposed expansion team in his hometown of Canberra, where he had been a ball boy for the territory’s defunct NBL side, the Canberra Cannons.
The start date for the next NBL season will be confirmed at a later date.
