The ink is barely dry on Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera’s new St Kilda contract, but already talk of his next destination has started and the Tassie Devils could be the club to make him the AFL’s first $3 million man, according to Alastair Lynch.
This week the Saints star finally put an end to speculation about his future as he committed for another two years on a deal purported to be worth more than $4 million over two years.
The 22-year-old rejected huge money offers from Adelaide and Port Adelaide to remain in the red, white and black and become the first player to earn in excess of $2 million a season.
Interestingly, Wanganeen-Milera opted for a short-term contract, so he becomes available in 2028, the same year that the Devils are due to enter the league as the 19th club.
And Lynch is not only keen for the club to make a move, he said he would be staggered if they haven’t already made their case.
“What do you reckon, $3 million? It’s not my role but if Todd and Derek aren’t talking to his manager I would be staggered.
“If he wants to wander down and play for the Devils in 2028 and beyond, we might be able to do something better than $2m.
“Draft concession rules aren’t out yet but they should be out after the AFL commission meeting in September, but we will have a component of a sign on bonus.
“That will allow the likes of marquee players to have a sign on and sweeten the deal to come across the Bass Strait.”
In line for his first All-Australian next week, Wanganeen-Milera this week underlined his loyalty to the Saints – for now.
"From the moment I arrived at St Kilda, the staff and my teammates have supported me in every way, not just to be a better footballer, but a better person," he said.
"I know how special it is to pull on the red, white and black. Every time I run out, I'm representing my family, my culture and this club. That means everything to me.
"I've still got so much I want to improve in my game, and I know this is the right place for me to keep growing. I've got great people around me who push me to be better every day.
"I want to help create something long-lasting here. We've got a tight group and a clear direction, and I'm proud to be part of building that future."
