Mitchell magic snaps Rabbitohs' four game losing streak
South Sydney has broken a four-game losing streak with a come-from-behind win against the Brisbane Broncos.
A second-half turnaround led by star Latrell Mitchell has seen the Rabbitohs score 22 unanswered points to defeat the Broncos 22-14 at Accor Stadium on Friday night.
Mitchell was returning to the team after being suspended for a week over a dangerous contact charge against Melbourne Storm’s Sualauvi Faalogo.
And in his return, he was electric for the Rabbitohs.
Mitchell converted all three goal conversions, a penalty goal, a two-point field goal and a try to help lead the comeback.
He was even more impressive defensively as he managed two try-saving tackles on Payne Haas and Deine Mariner.
He also managed to out run Ben Hunt and prevent him from scoring off an Adam Reynolds grubber in the 32nd minute.
Without Mitchell, the Rabbitohs would have likely lost their fifth game in a row after starting the season with a 4-1 record, which just shows how influential his performance was.
South Sydney assistant coach Ben Hornby would praise Mitchell’s performance, noting the defensive impact he had.
“Latrell does that all the time in defence to be fair to him,” Hornby said on SEN’s Saturday League Kick-off.
“He makes big tackles all the time, and you could tell in his first couple of carries; I think his first carry he ran straight at Pat Carrigan and his second carry, he went straight at Payne Haas.
“He knew that he was on, they’re not blokes you really want to be running into on kick returns.
“But that was putting him in that mindset that he needed to be, that he had to lead by example to show the boys that there was no backwards step from us.
“Those try-savers, one on Payne Haas and one on (Deine) Mariner in the corner was huge for us alongside his field goal obviously.”
Coach Wayne Bennett maintained his nonchalant manner when asked about his captain’s performance in the post-game press conference.
“He just does what Latrell does,” Bennett said.
“That’s what makes him a special player.”
South Sydney will be up against the Wests Tigers in Round 11 at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.
