“Lowest rated player”: The shock Champion Data ranking

Champion Data’s Daniel Hoyne uncovered a shock revelation within the database, pointing out the star midfielder currently ranked as the lowest rated player in the AFL over the last six weeks.
The data’s ranking bases players off of their ability to win the ball, use the ball effectively and impact the game, with factors of disposal, scoreboard damage and clangers all playing a role in developing a player rating.
Through that database, the last six weeks has seen a rather surprising outcome, with one of the AFL’s premium young talents ranking as the lowest player over that timeframe.
“The lowest rated player in the comp over the last six weeks is Harley Reid,” Hoyne told SEN Sportsday.
“I understand he’s 20 and he’s played 30 games of footy, he’s probably going to be a star.
“The reason why he is the lowest rated player in the comp, and the reason why I want to talk about it – the negative side of things, the free kicks, the 50s and all that, they contribute to the overall rating.
“That is a significant contributor to the fact that he is rated like that. I’m not talking about that conversation; I’m talking about the actual footy performance.
“2025 footy, it’s about how you use it, and how you win it. Over that six-week period, Harley is having the fourth least impact of any player in the competition with how he uses the ball.
“It’s on the agenda just to have a look with Harley. We can all see what he does with how he wins it. It’s brutal, it’s exciting, it’s powerful and you do need players to be able to do that and be able to impact the game in that phase.
“But, just over this six-week period, with what he’s doing, with how he’s using the ball from a field kicking perspective, fifth worst of any midfielder in the competition, they’re getting nothing out of his handball game, and his accuracy in front of goal is poor.
“Is this Harley, is this the version that we’re going to get? Are we going to get the version of Harley for the next five to ten years that is ball-winning Harley over ball-user Harley, or, like we’ve seen throughout his career, he’s had periods throughout his career where he has been a top 60 ball user in the competition.
“So, we have seen it, we’re just not currently seeing it.”
Over the last six weeks, Harley has averaged well over 20 disposals, five clearances and five tackles, however averages just over 60 per cent disposal efficiency, going below 60 per cent by foot.
Within that time, the Eagles failed to win a game.
