Kane Cornes’ Countdown: The AFL’s best duos
SEN • April 3rd, 2025 10:50 am

Kane Cornes has provided his list of his top 10 duos in the AFL.
The top 10 encompasses both players on-field, coaches off-field and key footy partnerships behind the cogs of clubland. The 10 named aren’t necessarily just the best two players on any given team, but those in footy that are linked together intrinsically.
Cornes’ thoughts were inspired by the characters of Goose and Maverick from the movie Top Gun following the passing of American actor Val Kilmer who featured in the film as Iceman.
Kane’s Countdown - “The game’s best duos…”
(In no particular order)
1 – Sam & Lyndall Mitchell (Hawthorn)
“What they are doing as a duo is disrupting the whole of the league (with recruitment),” Cornes said on SEN’s Sportsday.
2 – Graeme Allen & Stephen Silvagni (St Kilda)
“I think Gubby and SOS is a good duo… it’s been a long partnership.”
3 – Scott Pendlebury & Steele Sidebottom (Collingwood)
“It’s been a great AFL duo with the amount of games they’ve played together.”
4 – Nick Watson & Jack Ginnivan (Hawthorn)
“I think Watson and Ginnivan are forming a very formidable combination in terms of the way they do it on and off the field.”
5 – Isaac Kako & Nate Caddy (Essendon)
“We’re going to be talking about this duo from Essendon, they went to school together and they’re genuinely best mates. The future of the club is in their hands. They’ll have great chemistry on the field.”
6 – Lachie Neale & Harris Andrews (Brisbane)
“A different duo, but they’re premiership-winning co-captains together. It’s been incredibly successful for both.”
7 – Isaac Heeney & Chad Warner (Sydney)
“You could probably chuck in Errol Gulden as well to make a trio.”
8 – Ross Lyon & Corey Enright (St Kilda)
“Every time Ross speaks he pumps up Corey Enright like you wouldn’t believe, they’ve got a nice duo forming … I wouldn’t be surprised if Corey Enright is the next coach of the Saints.”
9 – Noah Anderson & Matt Rowell (Gold Coast)
“As a duo at the moment, it is the most powerful midfield combo that we have in football.”
10 – Will Day & Jai Newcombe (Hawthorn)
“It is an excellent duo … would you take Day and Newcombe or Anderson and Rowell?”
