"Honour the contract": Hannay's pitch to keep Tino at the Titans
Josh Hannay is hopeful captain Tino Fa’asuamaleaui will remain loyal to the Gold Coast Titans after the key re-signings of Jayden Campbell and Beau Fermor.
Fa’asuamaleaui is the arguably the biggest name currently off-contract, and the Titans are desperate to keep their captain as they enter a new era under Hannay.
The Origin and Kangaroos prop has attracted interest from the Perth Bears and Melbourne Storm amongst others as he weighs up his contract future after four disappointing seasons finishing in the bottom four.
Hannay has previously worked with Fa’asuamaleaui in Queensland Origin camp, and is hoping for a show of faith in what he can build on the Gold Coast.
Speaking to SEN 1170 Sportsday, Hannay was hopeful the lock forward would extend.
“First and foremost, we want Tino (Fa’asuamaleaui) at the club,” Hannay said.
“We want him to honour the contract that he signed and that’s the intention.
“I’ve got a really good relationship with Tino… I’ve worked a lot with him over the last four years in the State of Origin arena so there’s a mutual respect there and an understanding of what each other is like.
“And I think with that, that has brought a sense of comfort to Tino.
“He knows what he gets with me and I’ve got no doubt he has a desire to still be at the club and be at the club when it’s successful because he’s withstood some challenging years.
“He’s a winner, he plays at the highest level. He represents his country so he wants to come back to a club where he’s enjoying that same level of success.
"Part of the pitch to Tino and the discussions around Tino is giving him an idea and an understanding of what the future looks like.
“Do I think he’s a leader? I think he absolutely has potential to be a great leader.
“He’s not there yet, and that’s not a knock on him at the moment. It’s just he’s a young man I think learning a lot on the run and part of the pitch to Tino is we’re going to put as much support around him to not only develop him as a player but develop him as a young man and a leader.”
Securing the re-signings of Jayden Campbell and Beau Fermor were two major wins for Hanny and the Titans, but the extension of Fa’asuamaleaui would cap off a highly successful pre-season for the rookie coach.
Campbell recently turned down a $6 million, 5-year offer from the Perth Bears to stay with the Titans on less money, while Fermor inked a three-year extension as he strives to become a mainstay in the Origin arena.
In his first season as a head coach, Hannay was proud to have the faith of his senior players, knowing how important their signatures were.
“It's not lost on me, the trust and faith that those guys are showing in me, in the direction that we're taking as a club in these early stages,” Hannay expressed.
“Battles to retain those players were genuine, the threat of Perth is real… there's a lot going on in that space with two new franchises coming into the competition, so in a short space of time, I've had to work really hard… to create an environment here quickly that the players can see a future in.
“Now, it’s about acting on all those visions and all those discussions.
“There’s still work to be done to ensure we keep the players that we want to keep and we’re active in the player market bringing in the players that we want to bring in.
“A lot of good work's been done and and and keeping Jayden Campbell and Beau Fermor, phenomenal start.
“It was imperative that we're able to keep those guys. They're the heart and soul type of players of the club, so I would be lying if I was to say that wouldn’t have been a blow to us had one of those guys or or even both of those guys decided to leave, so the fact that they've shown some faith in us doesn't go unrecognised.”
Hannay confirmed Campbell would line up at halfback alongside AJ Brimson in the halves, with Keano Kini set to reclaim his fullback role after missing most of last season through injury.
Brimson has previously been vocal about his desire to play in the spine and not centre, and Hannay is set to reward that with first crack once he returns from injury.
“I'd love to give (Brimson) a real opportunity at six,” Hannay revealed.
“I think his versatility has hurt him at times throughout his career to this point. I see he has an ability to play six.
“It's unfortunate that he's come out of the (Ashes) tour with a busted shoulder so he's gonna miss some valuable reps at training but if we can get enough into him in the over the course of the pre-season, I see his combination with Jayden Campbell and Keano Kini in our spine as a really dangerous one.
“I know he can play centre, but I really want to give him an opportunity to make a fist of the six position.”
