"One won't be there": Crucial Munster decision looms for Storm after Pezet bombshell
Jonah Pezet has formally told the Storm he will explore his options come November 1, with at least four clubs expected to make a play for the rising Melbourne halfback.
Pezet had a get-out clause in his contract that he could choose to activate should Jahrome Hughes extend his time with the club.
Hughes inked a long-term extension with the Storm back in July that meant Pezet could activate his clause whenever he chooses, and it appears he has done so now.
The Raiders, Eels, Cowboys, and Titans have all been linked to Pezet, who is touted as one of the best young halves in the NRL after a number of standout performances in first grade this season.
Pezet hasn’t ruled out staying with the Storm, and the decision around his contract could impact the future of Cameron Munster at the club.
Munster has been linked to moves to the Wallabies, R360, and the Perth Bears, and while the Storm want the five-eighth to remain, they won’t stand in his way if he decides to leave.
Braith Anasta is the manager for both Munster and Pezet.
Speaking on SEN 1170 Drive, Michael Carayannis revealed only one of Munster and Pezet would be able to remain at the Storm.
“He's essentially a free agent. The deal that they made when he re-signed was that if they re-signed Jahrome Hughes, Jonah Pezet could be a free agent,” Carayannis said.
“Munster and Pezet are obviously linked because Braith (Anasta) is their agent so… I don't see a situation where Munster and Pezet, both of them are in Melbourne long-term.
“So if Munster does go to Perth, you'd assume Pezet stays. If Munster stays in Melbourne, Pezet will leave.”
Carayannis floated the concept of a loan deal for Pezet in 2026, but indicated it would only happen if Munster was set to move on in 2027.
“The loan deal is definitely a huge opportunity, and if that happens, it's because Munster's going to Perth,” Carayannis revealed.
“It's a really interesting situation for Braith to navigate because he's got two halves, both at the one club, and one won't be there.”
