Johns: Tigers players need to get over Galvin saga
The likelihood of Lachlan Galvin being a Wests Tigers player in 2026 is close to zero, according to Matty Johns who wants to see the teen bury the hatchet with his teammates.
The saga surrounding Galvin’s future has dominated the NRL in recent weeks amid claims of bullying, fall out and disrespect.
But as the dust starts to settle and the club’s CEO moves to assure fans and other parties of interest that all is well in Tigerland, Johns is adamant that Galvin won’t be seeing out his current contract (through end of 2026).
“I don’t think he will be there next year,” John said on SEN’s 1170 The Run Home.
“There’s no doubt there is manoeuvring for a release.
“I think he will play out the rest of the season and I’ll be disappointed if he didn’t.”
Earlier this month, Galvin rejected a big money contract to stay with the club saying he believed he would develop into a better player elsewhere.
The news stunned the rugby league world and attracted an avalanche of criticism and trolling of the 19-year-old.
Galvin’s explanation on his decision was met by social media sledging by Tigers captain Jarome Luai who posted an Instagram story with the caption "Team First".
Luai's post was followed by winger Sunia Turuva then posted a video on Instagram of Galvin's locked accompanied by the song "Here comes the money".
The two posts sparked accusations of bullying and concern for Galvin's mental wellbeing and prompted his agent to send a legal letter to the club outlining claims of an unsafe workplace.
Johns said it’s time to get over the dressing-room issues.
“In the dressing-room blokes can be off each other and there’s one thing that can solve all that and that’s a good win,” he said.
“If they go out this weekend, play well and get the win they will walk into the sheds and bury the hatchet.
“I don’t think this will be a big deal ongoing for the playing group, they will get over it.”
Galvin is back in the Tigers' squad for Sunday's clash with the Sharks at Leichhardt Oval.
