It was “pleasure” for former New Zealand captain Jeremy Coney and Sport Nation cricket commentator to discover he was being inducted into the New Zealand Cricket Hall of Fame, though he admits he was caught off guard by the honour.
“It was a surprise. Of course it was. I’d never thought that I would join the luminaries, who I looked out from the commentary box down upon for the first time.” Coney told Sport Nation Mornings.
“You always question whether you’re worthy when you’re kind of on the edge. I’m sure I wasn’t straight in there and my performances didn’t warrant that... I wondered if it had been a mistake somewhere in the bowels of New Zealand Cricket!"
Coney reflects on the changing nature of the game, highlighting the rise of professionalism compared to his playing days, when cricket often sat alongside full-time work.
Among many other hilarious stories, he recalls facing Pakistan and his first real exposure to spin in New Zealand in a “French cricket” moment.
“This didn’t please gully at all because suddenly a bat was arriving at them as the ball was arriving to me.”
And plenty of memories made along the way.
“You never got marked by John Bracewell in the warm-ups (touch rugby). You’d have raked shins! He didn’t take any prisoners, old Brace!”
From surprise Hall of Fame recognition to classic dressing-room yarns, Jeremy Coney delivers 30 minutes of insight, humour and reflection from a storied career.
