Titans boss's plan to stave off Bears $6m raid
Gold Coast boss Scott Sattler is confident the Titans will re-sign Jayden Campbell after the Bears launched a monster bid to make the half their marquee signing.
The Bears have reportedly offered Campbell $6 million over five seasons to join the club ahead of their first season in the NRL.
Retaining Campbell, along with Origin stars Tino Fa’asuamaleaui and Beau Fermor, will be the first major test for new coach Josh Hannay and Sattler as they attempt to deliver the Gold Coast their first premiership in the NRL or NRLW.
The key for Campbell at the Titans is stability and clarity around the club's coach, culture and his position, which Sattler is confident the club will showcase to their star half as pre-season training begins.
“Knowing him as well as what I do, Jayden as a person doesn't like a lot of confusion in his life so to be able to create that environment, it's probably more important for us that he feels supported and that he feels as though he's going to get the position that he wants to play as opposed to trying to get into any bidding wars,” Sattler told SEN.
“I empathise with them actually… putting my player’s hat on, I can see why they want to see… whether it's an environment that they think is going to be a winning environment and individually feel as though they are getting that specified coaching.
“It's really important to us that we do that from day one, not when the senior players arrive but when the younger players started arriving over the last two weeks.
“What Josh (Hannay) has said to guys like Jayden, AJ (Brimson) and Lachie (Ilias) is they’ll get plenty of reps in those (half) positions and then by the time that trials come around, we’ll have a fair idea of what that's going to look like.
“He has promised AJ that he'll get a lot of reps in it at six and Jayden at seven and with Lachie Ilias there as well we’ve got a lot of depth there which is probably the most important part for the club.
“We're confident we can put a really good case forward of why you should stay and then the decision really comes down to the individual… We're confident we can provide that environment for them and let's see if the footy gods look after us in that way.”
Sattler revealed he had sat down with Campbell to address the recent confusion around the club’s pursuit of Craig Bellamy after Hannay had been appointed head coach.
“I had coffee with Jayden a number of weeks ago and we spoke about that very issue and the news that had surfaced through that period,” Sattler said.
“He's had a little bit to do with Josh at Origin level. He really enjoys his coaching, so he wanted some clarity around what it looks like with Josh first and foremost, his coaching and whether he's going to be able to get that education that he enjoyed from Josh previously.
“That clarity around what the coaching scenario looks like in the immediate future was really important to him so now that we've been able to address that, he’s a lot clearer on where the club’s heading.
“I've got no doubt he's been talking to some of the players that are already back training and they're getting really good reports. We’d like to think that what we've created here at the club is a really good environment where those players that haven't had a lot of clarity over the last few years are starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel.”
Ensuring Campbell remains at the club means more to Sattler than just keeping a star player.
The new Titans boss won a premiership with Campbell’s father, Preston, back in 2003, and is driven by the thought of bringing premiership glory to the Gold Coast with a second generation of Campbell.
“Personally, I’ve got this selfish view where I was fortunate enough to win a comp with his dad and I'd love to win a comp with his son,” Sattler said.
“When I look at what's important to me when it comes to Jayden, who I've got a really strong emotional attachment to, I look at him and say he's a big reason why I accepted to come back to the club because I'd love to see this kid be one club player.
“I’d love him to be a guy that plays an integral role in the club winning its first premiership and if I’m fortunate to be part of that, I'll take a selfish view of but that's something that's really appealing.”
