Tedesco reveals surgery plan amid backlash over Ashes withdrawal

James Tedesco has revealed playing for the Kangaroos “was not on his radar” at all for this year amid criticism over his decision to forgo the Ashes series in order to attend his brother’s wedding.
The Dally M winner this week withdrew from selection for the forthcoming series in England with Peter V’landys saying he had opted to attend the family event where he will be bestman.
But speaking to SEN 1170 Breakfast the morning after being awarded his second Dally M, the Roosters star also revealed he is due to undergo stem cell treatment on his knee which requires an eight-week rehab.
“At the start of the year I didn’t have Kangaroos on my radar,” he told Voss and Brandy. “I didn’t get picked last year; I didn’t play Origin. I hadn’t heard anything in the last few weeks, so I had to ring Peter.
“There's my brother’s wedding but I’m also having stem cells put in my knee next week which is an eight week rehab.
“Those two things mean it wasn’t the right situation.
“It’s hard, I want to be back playing for my country. I’ve captained Australia an there is no prouder moment. I said to Peter hopefully if I have a big year next year I’ll be considered for the World Cup.”
At last night’s Dally M Awards, Tedesco was recognised for his incredible season which saw him play every game in 2025 for the Roosters, scoring 11 tries and notching 22 try assists and 21 line breaks.
Tedesco also won his fourth RLPA Players' Champion award earlier this week, equalling Jonathan Thurston's record for most RLPA awards.
The Roosters' captain also took home captain of the year and fullback of the year honours. It is the second time he has won the captain of the year award and fifth time he has won fullback of the year; two more than the next best.
Asked how it feels to be recognised, he said: “I don’t think I’m playing any differently but speaking to Robbo, I’ve been doing my job consistently. Nothing superstar-ish.
“The RLPA one is special because it’s your peers and rivals. That is held in high regard. Dally M is a huge night and a huge honour. I’m really proud.
“I knew I had to work hard, I had to make a lot of sacrifices. I’m glad it’s all paid off. I think the young James would be proud of where I am today.”
