The resurgence of provincial rugby in New Zealand is truly something special.
This year has been a reminder of why these competitions, both the NPC and Heartland Rugby, are the lifeblood of the game.
You're witnessing the essence of what rugby means to the regions, where the passion runs deep and rivalries like Mid-Canterbury against South Canterbury or nail-biters like West Coast's narrow victory over Horowhenua-Kapiti reignite the love for the sport.
These are the stories that deserve more attention.
The Ranfurly Shield Saga. The intense 'Battle of the Bays'. The epic moments like Waikato's last-minute drop goal against Taranaki capture why provincial rugby feels so special.
The rivalry, history, and the grassroots spirit build our rugby DNA and it goes beyond mere competition. It's where players learn their trade, where communities rally together, and where future stars are born.
However, there's an undeniable tension between the provincial game and the modern demands of professional rugby.
Super Rugby, as incredible as it is, sometimes overshadows this foundation level.
'Storm week' isn't working and the condensed schedule feels unsustainable. Expecting players to grind through games in a short period only dilutes the quality and increases the risk of injury.
A reset is needed, one that gives provincial rugby the space and respect it deserves.
Perhaps the solution is to shorten Super Rugby, creating a window for provincial competition to thrive. This way, players can compete at both levels without the clash of schedules. It allows provincial teams to build momentum, gives fans a clearer focus, and restores balance to the rugby ecosystem.
What's clear is that provincial rugby is making a comeback and it's up to New Zealand Rugby to foster that momentum. Without it, as I said, there is no game.
Grassroots is where the heart is and it's time for the decision makers to start listening to the communities and the loyal fans who are the backbone of New Zealand rugby.
