Kalyn Ponga has opened up on his MΔori roots and the pull of home with Anthony Gelling and Mark Stafford on Sport Nation Afternoons.
The Newcastle Knights & Queensland superstar is returning home to Aotearoa to rest and recover, and to spend quality time with his family - something he cherishes deeply.
βAll my values, who I am, everything that I am really is back in New Zealand. It's my family, it's my culture.β
He won't be far from the field - heading to Eden Park for Saturday's Pacific Champs clash between the Kiwis and Tonga.
One man he will be keeping a keen eye on is Kiwi half Dylan Brown, who will be partnering with Ponga at the Knights for the upcoming season.
βI'm excited to have him in the mixβ¦it's just about getting to work really and trying to fast-track that combination.β
As far as his future is concerned, Ponga is in no rush to make a decision.
βIβm yet to put on a representative jersey for a nation, so not sure how that's going to plan out.β
When it comes to wearing the MΔori colours, the connection runs deep.
βEvery time I put on the MΔori jersey, that week in camp just feels like I'm with my cousins. It's just that sense of belonging that you can't replicate. It's pure.β
