“It’s over”: King calls the 2025 Rising Star race
David King has labelled the Rising Star race as over after Round 19 of the 2025 AFL season.
The reason King thinks it’s over is due to the recent performances of Adelaide’s Daniel Curtin, who is the current favourite with Sportsbet at odds of $2.50.
In the last four games alone, Curtin has had three performances of 20+ more disposals and 6+ marks playing on a wing.
Curtin’s hot form has coincided with Adelaide’s with the Crows winning seven of their last eight games as they push for a top-two finish.
Given Curtin’s importance to one of the competition’s best teams, King thinks that he’s now done enough to secure the prized award.
He discussed the former No. 8 pick’s 2025 so far with his SEN Breakfast co-host Kane Cornes.
King: “The Rising Star is over. Dan Curtin is your man.”
Cornes: “There’s the headline.”
King: “In contested marking, he is a beast, he's a beauty in the air.
“He's had a terrific six-week patch. I don't know who else has had a better six-week patch of the Rising Star contenders.”
Cornes: “So, it’s over?”
King: “I think it is. I mean, who else is in front of him?”
Cornes: “It’s a good race, by the way, for this Rising Star, it’s a good class.”
“Levi Ashcroft is there - he’s been good.”
Cornes: “Murphy Reid, (Connor) O’Sullivan has been good and (Nate) Caddy, so it’s a very good class.”
King: “He (Curtin) has been given a lot of responsibility too, I think.
“He's been asked to do more than what those other Rising Star contenders are asked to do.”
Curtin ($2.50) is currently the shortest priced in the market ahead of Brisbane’s Levi Ashcroft ($3.25), Essendon’s Archie Roberts ($9) and Fremantle’s Murphy Reid ($9).
