“It’s not true”: Trainer puts Hawkes and Gollan Hong Kong training rumours to bed

Michael Hawkes is not going to Hong Kong, neither is Tony Gollan.
That is what trainer Wayne Hawkes has confirmed after rumours regarding the next Australian-based trainer to move to Hong Kong ran riot.
First it was Wayne’s brother and co-trainer Michael whose name was being bandied around in Hong Kong racing circles.
Now it has been denied that Gollan, who had Antino run in the Hong Kong Mile at Sha Tin on Sunday, is set to leave Queensland for international pastures.
“I’ve got a big story to drop,” Hawkes said on SENTrack’s Giddy Up.
“It is about Hong Kong racing and the talk in the town is Michael Hawkes. Even the great Gareth Hall rang Michael Hawkes and said, ‘Can you confirm or deny - are you going to Hong Kong?’.
“Michael is not going to Hong Kong. He hasn’t been spoken to and that (rumour) is total and utter rubbish.
“So everyone is running around going, ‘Who are we talking about when it comes to a trainer going to Hong Kong?’.
“That name is Tony Gollan. That has been the name that everyone is throwing around as a rumour.
“I can confirm it’s not true. Tony Gollan is not going to Hong Kong, so that rumour is false.”
Hawkes insists he does not claim to know which Aussie trainer is set to move to Hong Kong, but does know that it is neither his sibling Michael or Gollan.
For the record, Antino ran 11th for Gollan under jockey Blake Shinn in Sunday’s Mile which was won by Voyage Bubble and James McDonald for Rick Yiu.
British trainer David Eustace up and left his role as co-trainer at Ciaron Maher Racing to take up a position with the Hong Kong Jockey Club at the start of 2024.
