Initially no concern: The timeline of serious Maginness injury

There was initially no concern surrounding Finn Maginness prior to a lacerated kidney being detected on the weekend.
The Hawthorn midfielder copped a knock during the 38-point win over Port Adelaide at UTAS Stadium in Launceston on Saturday and it was later discovered to be a serious issue.
It is understood that Maginness felt a little sore after the combative clash but there was no fear or apprehension that anything severe had occurred.
AFL Media’s Josh Gabelich was in Launceston on Saturday and has provided great detail on the timeline of the nasty injury.
Maginness remains in Tasmania after undergoing surgery in Hobart.
“Finn Maginness remains in Tasmania with a lacerated kidney,” he said on SEN’s Fireball.
“He had a great role on Zak Butters and turned back the clock a bit with that tagging role. There wasn’t a clear incident and there wasn’t alarm in the rooms post-game.
“In fact, after I came back from Sam Mitchell’s press conference I got speaking to his mum and some other parents in the room - about 40 minutes post-game. There was no concern at that time.
“He was feeling a little bit crook in the guts, had a bit of a sore stomach. There was probably three hours between the final siren and the flight. About an hour and a half after the final siren they sent him to Launceston General to get assessed. They weren’t sure if he was going to be right to fly.
“Fortunately they did because there they discovered the issue with his kidney. They put him on a flight down to Hobart. He went to Royal Hobart and had surgery overnight on Saturday night.
“He remained in hospital and yesterday the GM, Rob McCartney, flew down to be with the family and Finn Maginness.
“Right now a timeline is unclear. They don’t think it’s a Christian Petracca situation. But with five rounds to play his season is clearly in doubt. It’s a real shock because of how effective he was on Zak Butters and the potential severity of the situation.”
The Hawks can’t quite pinpoint when and how the lacerated kidney occurred in a rough and tumble game in the wet.
“They don’t know if it was a knock or anything. So many contested incidences in that wet weather game but they haven’t been able to specify which one it was,” Gabelich added.
The club was unable to provide a clear timeline for a possible Maginness return. It’s a blow for the Hawks after the 24-year-old restricted Port star Butters to 18 disposals - his lowest tally of the season.
In better news for the Hawks, gun midfielder Will Day is close to returning from the foot injury that has sidelined him since Round 3.
“Last Friday he had the scan that cleared him to return,” Gabelich said of Day.
“He’s been back in training for the last few weeks. As long as he gets through he’ll face Carlton on Thursday night.
“A huge inclusion with five games to go.”
The Hawks currently occupy fifth position with a 12-6 win-loss record. They next meet Carlton at the MCG on Thursday night as the pursuit of a top four spot continues.
