"I'm just being honest": Why Voss is concerned over the new-look Tigers

SEN’s Andrew Voss believes the Wests Tigers are one of the biggest disappointments from the opening round of the 2025 NRL season.
Following the signing of marquee players including Jarome Luai, Terrell May and Sunia Turuva among others, the Tigers were only able to produce eight points and were held scoreless in the second half.
The Knights ground out an ugly 10-8 win and Voss said there were plenty of performances from Tigers individuals that left a lot to be desired.
“The Wests Tigers were one of the biggest disappointments of the weekend for me,” Voss said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.
“I’m just being honest because I had greater expectations for the Tigers. They stunk the joint up.
“I thought the arrival of Luai was not awe-inspiring and Lachlan Galvin had his worst game in first grade.
“Newcastle were incredibly poor and somehow won. It needs to be pointed out that the Tigers played an opponent nowhere near the level of Melbourne or Manly and they still lost.
“Keep that in mind. If they played those others too, I’d be fearful of what the score would’ve been.
“I’m giving the Tigers some time and space but of all the teams that won in the first round, the Knights were the worst of them.
“The Tigers only got one try on them and that’s where I have the problem.”
Coach Benji Marshall conceded in the post-match press conference that he felt his side should’ve emerged victorious from the encounter and simple errors cost them the two competition points.
SEN’s Greg Alexander said he expected some teething issues from the new-look Tigers who enter the 2025 season on the back of the three consecutive wooden spoons.
“I think they’ll get better. They are a work in progress,” Alexander said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.
“Luai didn’t play any trial matches and the combination between (Luai and Galvin) will take time but they don’t have that much time.
“I don’t know what happened to their kicking game. Why kick it to where Kalyn Ponga is on the field?
“Don’t kick it to Ponga. He’ll get out of the in-goal area which he did; time after time.
“Teams have plans but they don’t change them on the run.
“Teams have plans but they don’t change them on the run.
“Luai and Galvin stepped themselves into trouble a lot of times.
“I’m willing to cut the Tigers some slack. They only lost by two points.”
The Tigers play the Parramatta Eels on Sunday at CommBank Stadium.
