How a summer of love has turned into a winter of divorce at Melbourne

Dermott Brereton, Gerard Healy and Sam Edmund have questioned what the Melbourne Football Club want to be following the actions of their officials across the last three years.
Since the drought-breaking premiership back in 2021, the Demons have been unable to get back to the same level, having gone out in straight sets in ’22 and ’23 alongside a 14th-place finish last season.
As a result of their poor form this year, which sees them sit 12th on the ladder with a 7-13 record, they have decided to part ways with their premiership-winning coach, Simon Goodwin.
As they are now the search for a new coach, which will not include John Longmire or Troy Chaplin, this would leave Brereton to wonder what kind of club they want to be going forward post-Goodwin.
“I don’t know what Melbourne want to be,” Brereton stated on SEN’s Crunch Time.
“I just don’t know.
“I’ve seen them; they’ve turned over several presidents (and) CEOs. The CEO they’ve got isn’t in there yet.
“And their list, some of their good players they’ve wanted to push them on.
“Some of them, they’ve wanted to keep, and then they’ve changed and flipped and flopped and that.
“I don’t know what Melbourne want to be.”
Later in the show, Healy would also ask why the board decided to sack Goodwin now, after having re-signed him last year to a two-year extension to 2026, when he was under similar pressure.
“The time for a strong board was 12 months ago,” he said.
“It wasn’t this time. It’s a bit of a knee-jerk reaction in many respects.
“I think he was entitled to have 12 more months. But if you didn’t want him and didn’t like what you were seeing, don’t give him a two-year extension, 12 months ago.
While Sam Edmund would keep his feelings short and sweet.
“The summer of love has turned into the winter of divorce.”
