Tassie star relocates to Victoria for Spring campaign
On the eve of her second Victorian campaign, the owners of star Tasmanian filly Geegees Mistruth have made a call regarding her immediate racing future.
Geegees Mistruth, along with stablemate Geegees Gemstone, will travel to Victoria next week in preparation for Geegees Mistruth’s first-up assignment in the Group 3 Cockram Stakes at Caulfield on 30 August.
The pair will be stabled at Te Akau Racing Stables at Cranbourne Turf Club and will remain under the care of the team at Te Akau Racing to pursue further races in Victoria throughout the Spring Carnival.
“Bonnie (stable name for Geegees Mistruth) has trialled exceptionally well in two Hobart trials, and Stuart and the team at Stuart Gandy Racing (SGR) could not have her in better order heading over the water for her Victorian campaign,” said Ben Geard, speaking on behalf of the Geard family.
A winner at six of her 11 career starts, including the Group 3 Mystic Journey (1200m) and Vamos Stakes (1400m) last season, Geegees Mistruth is a leading contender for multiple gongs at next month’s Tasmanian Horse of the Year Awards in Launceston.
Along with Geegees Gemstone, who won the 2024 Listed Newmarket Handicap (1200m), the duo are without doubt two of Tasmania’s leading gallopers.
“We want to ensure that when we take on some of the best horses in the country, we are not tackling Bass Strait every time. Unfortunately, that’s one of the disadvantages of living in our island state,” Geard said.
Geegees Mistruth endured a superb Victorian Spring Carnival in 2024, securing Group placings in three of her five starts outside of Tasmania.
More recently, connections have faced the pitfalls of travelling horses, with Geegees Gemstone going to Victoria in May for the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes but were forced to return home without racing due to several issues.
“We look forward to seeing what the next few months bring, but either way, we are proud of what the horses have achieved to date, both in Tasmania and interstate,” said Geard.
“We acknowledge the tireless effort put in by Stuart, Ruth (Gandy) and the entire team at SGR, and we are very thankful for that.”
Following the Victorian Spring Campaign, the plan is for both horses to return to the family farm at Broadmarsh for a spell under the care of Stuart Gandy, before being prepared for the Tasmanian Summer Racing Festival.
