We love this time of year!
It's what we in the racing industry live for.
The good horses are starting their spring campaigns and there is excitement brewing all around the country.
This weekend at The Valley and Randwick, and over in New Zealand, there promises to be storylines aplenty.
These are the Hallmarks this weekend:
Lady Shenandoah announces herself as Ka Ying Rising’s biggest Everest danger
Chris Waller’s star mare Lady Shenandoah resumes in Saturday’s Concorde Stakes after a stellar three-year-old preparation.
She’s already a three-time Group 1 winner who could emerge as Ka Ying Rising’s biggest threat for The Everest.
If she’s as good as some think she is then she should take care of this Concorde field which will drastically cut her Everest odds - currently $11 with bet365.
King Zephyr says bring on the Sir Rupert Clarke
King Zephyr looks well placed in the last at The Valley.
Grahame Begg’s gelding is a winning machine, saluting in five of this seven career starts to date.
If he wins Saturday’s BM84 with authority then you can expect him to shorten for the Sir Rupert Clarke at Caulfield in two weeks.
McDonald lands a plunge with a first-starter in the McKenzie
Clinton McDonald is known for pulling off a betting plunge.
He saddles up Deep Field colt Rosberg in the Listed McKenzie Stakes (Race 6) at The Valley.
Currently $5 with bet365, there’s every chance he shortens with Jamie Melham booked for the ride.
Australasian Group 1 double for the Kelso team
The Kiwi training team of Ken and Bev Kelso could be in for a massive Saturday with two Group 1 favourites in two counties.
They have Proisir Plate favourite Legarto in at Ellerslie at 2:35pm AEST, just over a couple of hours before the Moir Stakes with Alabama Lass.
It would be some training feat if they could pull off victory in both races.
Or could Mitch Freedman get Skybird to win back-to-back Group 1s over 1000m after another injury layoff?
