"Animal cruelty": Is Tom Sherry's suspension long enough?
Jockeys Tom Sherry and Tommy Berry have both been suspended for separate instances at Rosehill.
Sherry was suspended for one calendar month for bumping horse Tyreek into the barrier, sending jockey Dylan Gibbons crashing into the ground.
While Berry has been suspended until September 20 for shifting Raging Force in front of Wodeton in the San Domenico Stakes.
The conversation on SENTrack’s Lay Back with Betfair around these suspensions largely revolved around Sherry’s suspension not being enough.
“Tom Sherry and Tommy Berry both got suspended,” Haylock revealed.
“Tommy Sherry got a month, he has caused a very bad fall and ruined the career and life of young horse Tyreek.
“He got a month’s suspension, I don’t think that’s strong enough.”
Tom Haylock believes the one month suspension isn’t enough due to other sporting codes generally receiving much harsher penalties.
“In other sports people are using profanities and getting four or five weeks, (I’m expecting) three months,” Haylock said.
“In today's society with concussions and animal cruelty, this penalty needs to be stronger.
“I’ve got no issue with Tommy Sherry, it’s not personal, but if you’re causing falls like that… The penalties need to be stronger.
“People are calling people names and getting four or five weeks in other sports, and then you’ve got a jockey causing serious injuries and serious falls, I just don’t think it’s enough.”
Dean Watling agreed with the synopsis of the situation but played the Devil’s advocate.
“I thought the same,” Dean Watling agreed.
“I know they do take track record into account for these suspension… I’m thinking Tommy’s got a pretty good rap sheet; therefore they were a bit lenient.
“Watching that back it was awful… Tom would be filthy at himself.
“Devil’s advocate to that, is there is probably a lot more depth in the NRL, AFL, where you can fill that void. Jockey’s we don’t have that depth.
“I definitely thought it would be more than a month.”
John Donohoe also chimed in, stating that it was awful to see his friends distraught from the situation.
“It was a pretty bad look, it was an awful look,” Donohoe agreed.
“Just to the connections of Tyreek and a couple of my friends who were in this horse, they were distraught, so to see them beside themselves… It’s awful to see.
“You don’t want that in the sport.”
