Renowned racing broadcaster Matt Hill has broken down a βfantastic renewal of the Turnbull (which) just whets our appetite for the next few weeksβ.
The Group 1 2000m Turnbull Stakes was won by the Melbourne Cup favourite Sir Delius, defeating the Cox Plate favourite Via Sistina (third) and Caulfield Cup favourite Half Yours (fourth).
Matt Hill learnt plenty about these favourites from the running of the $750,000 race and passed it on to the SEN family.
See Matt Hillβs break down of the key runners to follow out of the Turnbull below:
Sir Delius
βHe came in before Saturday as a real Melbourne Cup favourite, but we were always going to learn something over the weekend,β Hill said on SENβs Whateley.
βBecause that Turnbull Stakes had the Melbourne Cup favourite, the Caulfield Cup favourite in Half Yours, and the Cox Plate favourite in Via Sistina.
βSir Delius is going to have a Cox Plate-Melbourne Cup path in front of him now.
βYou canβt knock Gai Waterhouse, sheβs won a Melbourne Cup before.
βYouβd think Sir Delius is going to be very hard to beat in a Melbourne Cup.β
Via Sistina
βItβs probably a 50-50 how Via Sistina is going at the moment,β Hill admitted.
βI thought the run was pretty good on Saturday chasing from the back of the field on a track that was getting firmer through the day which suited horses up near the speed.
βBut she was certainly beaten by a decent distance by Sir Delius.
βVia Sistina, sheβs eight years of age now. Is she the horse she was 12 months ago? Iβm not sure, but I still wouldnβt discount her for the Cox Plate.β
Half Yours
βHalf Yours was fantastic running on into fourth. He gets 52.5kg in a Caulfield Cup in two weeksβ time,β Hill said.
βHow are they going to beat him? Heβs going to be very, very hard to beat.β
Half Yours will run in the Caulfield Cup on October 18, Via Sistina will run in the Cox Plate on October 25 and Sir Delius will run in the Melbourne Cup on November 4.
