Hawkins bags four for Crows as ex-Docker breaks league record with Eagles
This weekend saw the end of the longest active winning streak in Victorian country football.
Harrow Balmoral FNC, who have dominated the Horsham and District FNL over the past 3 seasons, had their undefeated run of 43 straight games come to an end over the weekend. The streak that goes all the way back to the opening round of the 2023 season ended with a 35-point loss to Noradjuha Quantong FNC, who now sit on top of the ladder and are on a 9 game winning streak of their own.
The current longest winning streak now belongs to Murchison Toolamba FNC in the Kyabram and District FNL on 24 consecutive wins, two ahead of Murray FNL club Congupna FNC who have won 22 on the trot.
While this was taking place, the 5th longest current losing streak was broken when Millewa FNL club Meringur FNC broke a 24 game run of losses holding on for a 5 point win against Gol Gol FNL, 6.8 44 to 5.9 39. Hearts were in the mouths of the Roos supporters throughout the final quarter as Gol Gol kicked 3.1 while they could only manage 3 points before the final siren sounded.
Gormandale FNC in the North Gippsland FNL hold the dubious honour of the longest active losing streak which now sits at 54 after their loss to Traralgon Tyers United FNC on the weekend. They sit behind Maryborough FNC, who are currently in recess for this season, with 62 games without a win, with the next active club behind them, Bunyip FNC, who chalked up loss number 45 over the round just completed.
We had the biggest winning margin so far and also the second highest score for 2025 when Sea Lake Nandaly FNC won their North Central FNL clash against Donald FNC by 280 points, 44.22 286 to 1.0 6. Max Cahoon and Lachy McCleland both walked away with a bag of 10 goals each in the massive win.
Collectively it was also the third weekend for the season where the combined winning average margin across the state was over 60 points for a round. With that being said, in the Outer East FNL Premier Division they had a second consecutive round with a match ending in a draw. Much like
last week where bad kicking cost a side the win, history repeated itself with Officer FNC kicking 8.12 60 to Healesville FNC 9.6 60. This also included Officer kicking a wayward 1.4 in the final quarter as opposed to Healesville’s 2.1.
Plenty of former AFL players left their mark on country footy this weekend.
Former Cat Tom Hawkins followed up his earlier season game for home town Finley FNC with a cameo for Beaufort FNC in the Central Highlands FNL in their match against Hepburn FNC. The Tomahawk kicked 4 goals for he Crows, helping his adopted side to not only a 36 point win but
the club's third win in the past two seasons.
His former teammate Trent West pulled the boots back on in the Hampden FNL for Terang-Mortlake FNC, who are coached by his former Brisbane teammate Lewis Taylor. His help wasn’t enough as their opponent North Warrnambool FNC remained undefeated with an 11.9 75 to 8.10 58 win, which included ex-Docker Michael Barlow running amok for the Eagles, breaking the league record for disposals with 56 touches for the day.
Former GWS and Melbourne defender Adam Tomlinson made his debut for Sorrento FNC in the Mornington Peninsula FNL’s Division 1, while current North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson headed home to support Kaniva Leeor FNC and to also be part of the 40 year
anniversary of Kaniva’s last premiership way back in 1985, a game in which he played a part in as a 17 year old, kicking 6 goals himself in the grand final win.
Ex-Gold Coast Sun and Cat Zac Smith made a big impact kicking 11 goals for East Geelong FNC in their 130 point win over Corio FNC in the Geelong and District FNL league, while former Blue and Roo Aaron Mullett continued his good form in front of the big sticks with another
big bag, this time it was 12 for Wandin FNC in their win over Gembrook Cockatoo FNC. While both impressive, they were still behind the 16 that former Docker
Josh Mellington kicked for Bears Lagoon Serpentine FNC in their big win over Newbridge FNC in the Loddon Valley FNL.
While 16 goals is impressive, 18 is even better and that was the total kicked by Longwarry FNC’s Jason Wells in his side's 154 point win over Bunyip FNC in the Ellinbank and District FNL. In what was a big weekend for forwards, there were fourteen who walked away with a haul of
10 or more goals with a special mention going to Cora Lynn FNC’s Nathan Gardiner who kicked 10 out of his side's 12 goals.
The massive haul of 18 not only helped Wells to be one of 6 forwards this weekend who reached the 50 goal milestone, but it rocketed him to the top of the overall leaderboard with 67 so far in 2025, four goals ahead of Mullett who has 63 while a haul of 14 goals by Birchip
Watchem FNC’s Ben Edwards has him sitting in third with 58 so far in 2025.
