Goodwin: "We’re not in the business of just getting better" as Dees fall to a 13 year low
Melbourne coach, Simon Goodwin says that they need to turn their improvements into positive results after another disappointing loss.
The Demons remain winless for 2025 so far having incurred a 39-point loss to Geelong at GMHBA stadium last night.
Melbourne did show signs of improvement throughout the match as they managed to keep the game within touching distance which saw them only trail by 16 points entering three-quarter time.
However, Melbourne’s issues regarding being able to score in the fourth quarter would rear their head only managed to score three points in the final term.
This now sees the Demons having scored a combined 33 points in the fourth across their four games compared to their opposition who have managed to score 135 points against them at the same stage.
Melbourne’s kryptonite in being able to be more efficient with inside 50s was also a constant throughout the match.
Despite having more inside 50’s in comparison to Geelong (50-49), they had an efficiency percentage of 32% compared to Geelong’s 61.2% once the ball got in there.
Speaking in the post-game press conference, Goodwin remained positive about the improvements made by the team, particularly around stoppages but noted that it needed to turn into positive results.
“We’re not in the business of just getting better,” Goodwin mentioned.
“We want to start turning this into positive results as a footy club.
“There is some things that we took a step forward in, which I think everyone would have been evident to see.
“But as I said, we want to translate this into some positive results.
“I thought our intent in and around the ball, our method was better, I thought our ability to defend the ground at times was better albeit they probably took a few more marks than we would of liked.”
On the Channel 7's coverage, Melbourne’s Christan Petracca was distraught at the result of the result which now sees the Demons 0-4 for the first time since 2012.
When asked about it, Goodwin was able to understand how Petracca felt and believed that it showed how much the club means to him.
“He’s a winner, he’s determined, he’s proud,” Goodwin said.
“He’s like everyone, he wants to really start to get some positive results.
“He’s a proud leader of our footy club and all our leaders are like that.
“So, of course, he is going to be disappointed.”
Melbourne will now head to Gather Round looking to get their first win of the season against Essendon.
Their game will take place at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night.
