GWS football boss Jason McCartney has commented on reports that Simon Goodwin has met with the club.
Channel 7’s Mitch Cleary reported on Wednesday that the sacked Melbourne coach had held talks with the Giants about a role for 2026.
Cleary said: “Simon Goodwin has spoken with GWS over a role for next year.
“The link: his wife is based in Sydney. Goodwin is expected to spend extended periods in the Harbour City.
“There’s been a significant increase to the soft cap for football spending from 2026 so the Giants could afford it.
“Plus the Sydney clubs have long spoken about the challenges in convincing big off-field names to the city.”
McCartney stopped short of saying the club had already spoken with Goodwin but did insist that conversations will take place.
“The thing about us and the Swans with coaches is there’s not a great depth of coaching talent in this market. What there is they are generally already at both of our clubs,” McCartney said on SEN’s Fireball.
“Someone like Simon, we know his situation in that his wife (Kristine) does live in Sydney so it’s one we’ll definitely have some conversations with at the right time.”
Goodwin has been spending time in Sydney since he parted ways wth the Demons last week.
The current Giants coaching staff under Adam Kingsley is made up of Brett Montgomery, Ben Hart, Craig Jennings, Jeremy Laidler, Shane Mumford and development coaches Wayne Cripps and Alicia Eva.
