'Get out': Ex-Blue relives club’s response to trade request

Former AFL defender Lachie Henderson has reflected on the most chaotic period of his career.
Henderson's AFL journey started with Brisbane where he played 15 games for the club across 2008 and 2009 until he was sent to Carlton in the Brendan Fevola trade.
In navy blue is where Henderson would make his name as a key forward who could play other roles. After 102 games for Carlton from 2010 to 2015, he requested a trade to Geelong.
That request came after Round 20, 2015, a year where the Blues won just four games. He was stood down by Carlton for the last three games of the season once he let his desires known.
While Henderson was happy to play on for the rest of the season, he says Carlton told him effectively to ‘get out of the club’.
He believes that since then, clubs have dealt with in-season trade requests with a far more open mind.
“The essence was that I was happy to do whatever needed to be done from that point on (after asking for a trade),” Henderson told SEN's This is Your Journey – thanks to Tobin Brothers.
“It was made very clear that what I needed to do was get out of the club.
“It was like none of the past mattered at that point, which I get from a point of view that's what's happening in that moment.
“But I think from that point on, things started to change in how they treated the players, whether it (a trade request) is done right or wrong.
“There were times that I didn't do things right through that year, 100 per cent.
“But it was like a kick to the curb, ‘We're done with you. See you later. Nothing else matters’.
“I played 102 games for them at that point, so it's not like I hadn't done my time.
“Yeah, I decided to leave, but at that time it was difficult to hear with the way it all went down.”
Henderson was dealt to the Cats ahead of the 2016 season, where he’d play a further 89 games in the hoops from 2016 to 2021.
He discussed his career and much more in this week’s episode.
