'Embarrassing' moment that epitomises Cronulla's concerning form slump
SEN’s Andrew Voss has called out Nicho Hynes and his Cronulla Sharks teammates for a bizarre moment in their 34-28 loss to the Brisbane Broncos on Sunday.
Broncos winger Josiah Karapani crossed over for his second try in the 58th minute to trim the margin back to six points after Brisbane earlier trailed by 16. However, in the build up to the try, Hynes appeared to be obstructed by Broncos forward Jack Gosiewski.
Several Sharks players proceeded to give up on the play and raised their hands in protest. The try, in Voss’ opinion, was correctly awarded and Voss believes the Sharks players involved should be "embarrassed" with their behavior.
“Nicho Hynes just falls over. He basically, trips, dives, plays for it, whatever,” Voss said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.
“It’s then the reaction of his teammates. It’s a scoring situation with the game on the line and no less than five Sharks players put their arms out.
“They all stop and they all appeal. Five of them. Pro-footballers. Karapani not only runs over the try line but is allowed to bring in 25m around under the post.
“I felt that was perhaps the most embarrassing moment for rugby league. I’d struggle to find worse.
“We have trained our players to reach this position for our players.
“It was the highest level of embarrassment not just for Cronulla and the five players but the bigger picture, it’s embarrassing for the game.
“They all gave up, stood still and put their arms out.”
The Sharks led 28-12 before conceding the final four tries of the game to slump to their third defeat in four weeks.
SEN’s Greg Alexander believes it is unfair for all the criticism to fall on Hynes but has called for the halfback to lift his output if the Sharks are to cause any damage in the finals.
“Nicho has been under pressure all year. He played some good footy for about a month when the Sharks were going good,” Alexander said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.
“Every seven is under pressure though. Nicho is just under a little bit more.”
“Their losses to the Warriors and Roosters, where both teams put 40 points on them was worrying.
“They led by 16 over the weekend on two separate occasions. They were well in front.
“They then bumbled around and made plenty of errors. It’s time to stand up.
“They are now six points out of the top four. They were in a position to win and couldn’t get it done.”
The Sharks travel to AAMI Park in Melbourne to take on the Storm on Sunday.
