Draft Watch: Richmond father-son a key piece in SA dominance
A huge weekend of this year’s draft talent saw two major clashes – Vic Country taking on South Australia, and the Allies facing Western Australia. Meanwhile, 6 massive Coates Talent League games were also played across Victoria.
Notably, South Australia were officially crowned National Champions, winning all four of their games by a combined margin of 178 points. The last time SA won the National Championships was back in 2018, which is the same year Izak Rankine, Connor Rozee and Jack Lukosius were drafted.
Plenty of SA stars shone, including potential No.1 pick Dyson Sharp, and a name that will have Richmond fans excited - Louis Kellaway.
However, the Brisbane and Gold Coast Academy prospects stole the show, with multiple impressive performances from players who may once again hand the Lions and Suns a dominant draft return.

Vic Country (57) vs (91) SA
Vic Country
Josh Lindsay
Lindsay was Vic Country’s standout, with the potential top 10 midfielder collecting a game-high 28 disposals. An elite-kicking midfielder who finds the ball with ease, he could be the most underrated on-baller in this year’s draft.
Willem Duursma
Potential No. 1 pick Willem Duursma was also among Vic Country’s best, finishing with 24 disposals, 3 marks and 3 tackles. The brother of Essendon’s Xavier and North Melbourne’s Zane could be one of the top selections this year.
Jesse Mellor
Geelong NGA prospect Jesse Mellor impressed up forward, kicking 3 goals from 10 touches. The Cats may have another quality medium forward on their hands if they decide to draft him.
Callum Smith
The grandson of Richmond legend Kevin Bartlett put in another solid performance, finishing with 20 disposals, 4 tackles and 3 clearances. If this youngster has a career anywhere near his grandfather’s, he could go down as one of the game’s greats.
Tairon Ah-Mu
Exciting Pacific Island talent Ah-Mu kicked 2 goals and clunked a game-high 10 marks, showcasing his elite aerial ability. He’s part of Melbourne’s NGA program, however he’s not eligible for priority selection by the Demons due to AFL rules, which currently only apply NGA priority access to players of Indigenous, Asian or African descent.
South Australia
Mitch Marsh
Arguably the best tall forward in this year’s draft, Mitch Marsh booted 5 goals in a best-on-ground performance, ending his carnival tally with 12 goals from 4 games.
Aidan Schubert
SA’s other key forward, Aidan Schubert, was also outstanding, kicking 2 goals and racking up 19 disposals with 6 marks. While Marsh might be the premier key forward in the draft, Schubert wouldn’t be far behind.
Dyson Sharp
The potential No. 1 pick and state captain was named SA’s most valuable player for the carnival. He finished with 21 disposals, 4 tackles and a goal, and could easily be the best midfielder of the class.
Sam Ainsworth
The 198cm ruckman had another standout game, collecting 21 disposals, 8 clearances and 12 hit-outs. Ainsworth could be a sneaky pick-up for clubs looking to bolster their ruck stocks.
Jett Dahlitz
Dahlitz was dominant off half-back, using his elite rebound and ball movement to great effect. He ended with 19 disposals, 5 marks and a goal from outside 50.
Louis Kellaway
Son of former Tiger Duncan Kellaway, Louis was also named among the best. The hard-nosed mid/defender collected 18 disposals, 6 marks and 6 tackles. Richmond will surely be eyeing him with a father-son selection.
Sam Cumming
A potential first-round pick, Cumming was again among the top performers, finishing with 16 disposals, 6 marks, 4 tackles and a goal, showcasing his strong two-way running.

Allies (79) vs (74) WA
Allies
Max King
St Kilda’s Max King might have some competition - the Sydney Academy key forward by the same name kicked the game-winner in a thrilling performance, ending with 2 goals from 5 scoring shots.
Dan Annable
Potential No. 1 pick and Brisbane Academy star Dan Annable was the Allies best, finishing with 25 disposals, 5 tackles, 5 clearances and 3 scoring shots. After drafting Levi Ashcroft last year, the Lions might again land the top talent of the draft.
Koby Coulson and Dylan Patterson
The Gold Coast Academy midfield duo dominated again. Coulson racked up 27 disposals, 5 tackles and 6 clearances, while Patterson collected 20 touches of his own. Both are potential top 10 picks who could walk straight into the Suns best 22.
Tyan Prindable
Dan Annable’s Lions Academy teammate, Tyan Prindable, had another strong showing with 18 disposals, 5 tackles and a goal. The potential first-rounder would be a valuable addition to Brisbane’s midfield depth.
Western Australia
Jacob Farrow
WA’s best on the day, rebounding defender Jacob Farrow amassed a game-high 30 disposals, including 25 kicks and 9 marks. Farrow showed off his elite ball use and run from defence.
Dale Sutherland
Farrow’s partner in crime down back, Dale Sutherland, impressed with 19 disposals and 4 tackles. A reliable and hard-working backman, Sutherland could be a hidden gem for clubs seeking consistency.
Sam Swadling
The hard-running mid/forward gathered 23 disposals and a goal, building from his near best on ground performance in the previous round. Swadling continues to strengthen his case as one of WA’s top draft prospects.
Wes Walley
The West Coast Academy small forward had his best game of the carnival, looking electric in attack with 2 goals and 10 disposals.

Back down in Victoria, Round 13 of the Coates Talent League saw some of the potential Victorian draft hopefuls prove their worth for the 2025 draft.
Northen Knight’s tall defender Gabriel Stumpf was the rounds best performer gaining 139 fantasy points. Stumpf took a game-high 13 marks, 8 rebound 50s, and racked up 31 touches in a losing side.
Potential top 5 pick Oliver Greeves went ballistic against the Rebels. The Eastern Ranges 191cm midfielder racked up 33 touches, 5 inside 50s, and a goal. Any clubs looking for a big-bodied midfielder with an elite attacking IQ should be looking at this youngster.
Small forward Lachy Dovaston booted 4 goals, adding to his 5-goal haul last week. The electric and crafty forward has now kicked 22.14 this season, and is shaping up as an amazing small forward selection for this seasons draft.
Collingwood father-son prospect Tom McGuane had a game-high 28 disposals, along with 6 marks, and a goal. Pies supporters should be licking their lips at this prospect.
