Dolphins coach Kristian Woolf has responded to rumours linking Daly Cherry-Evans to the expansion club.
Cherry-Evans revealed on Monday that the 2025 season will be his last in Manly Sea Eagles colours but has yet to confirm whether he will remain in the NRL, venture to the UK Super League or retire after 15 seasons.
The 36-year-old played his junior football at the Redcliffe Dolphins and whilst Woolf acknowledged the romanticism behind a potential move to the club, the Dolphins are yet to begin any discussions with the Queensland State of Origin captain.
“There has been no conversation whatsoever,” Woolf told SENQ Breakfast.
“This caught us by surprise 24-48 hours ago. It’s not something that we have pursued.
“Everyone is sitting back and wondering what is going on because it is a different situation.
“He’s a very good player and if there was a genuine interest from Cherry-Evans, then we would have a conversation.
“However, like I said, that has not happened at this stage.”
The Dolphins current halfback is young star Isaiya Katoa who had a breakout campaign in 2024 and is contracted until the end of the 2028 season.
Woolf reaffirmed that the 21-year-old is still the club’s first choice playmaker and is in the team’s future plans.
“We are happy to sit back at the moment because we are very comfortable with our situation in the halves,” Woolf added.
“There is no rush for us to find something different or do anything different.
“Isaiya Katoa is our seven going forward and that’s not going to change.
“We are very happy with how he is progressing. He is an elite player who is only going to get better.
“There won’t be any approaches (towards) Cherry-Evans.
“If there is genuine interest from him in returning to Redcliffe, then we would be silly not to at least have a conversation.”
The Dolphins have begun 0-3 to start the 2025 season and host the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night.
