"Definitely the front runner": Why Maguire trusts Reynolds to lead Broncos in 2025

Brisbane Broncos coach Michael Maguire has confirmed that halfback Adam Reynolds is likely to retain his position as captain.
After failing to make finals and parting ways with former coach Kevin Walters at the end of the 2024 season, former Broncos enforcer Gordon Tallis led the calls for star forward Pat Carrigan to overtake the captaincy from Reynolds.
Maguire, who coached Reynolds to a Premiership in 2014 with South Sydney, maintained that the 34-year-old was an exceptional leader and would lead a new-look Broncos side in 2025 despite suffering a neck injury in the off-season.
“Adam Reynolds is definitely the front runner,” Maguire told SEN 1170 Breakfast.
“He is a great leader in this space and I obviously have a deep connection with Reynolds with what we have done over time.
“I talk to him a lot about footy. We both enjoy that and we have been doing so for years.
“When I arrived, I just wanted to have a good look at what we have, the different styles of leadership and how we can put that all together.
“Our recent camp made me see players in a different sort of light. It was a big part of what I enjoyed and sometimes it was just sitting around and having dinner together.
“Reynolds is about two weeks away from full training. He’s been on the paddock and he’s been training and running.
“It takes time. You need a month to get through (rehab) but he’s progressing nicely. He’s ahead of where he needs to be.
“He’s managed it really well.”
A litany of Broncos stars had underwhelming seasons in 2024 following a Grand Final appearance the year prior.
One of those players was Selwyn Cobbo who made the positional switch from wing to centre in 2024 but failed to deliver the output akin to his breakout year in 2023.
Maguire vowed to move Cobbo back to the wing which he believes will best complement the desired game plan.
“I like him as a winger. I think he’s an absolute talent,” Maguire added.
“You look at wingers in the game today and you have to get your set started well. The teams winning competitions have wingers running plenty of metres.
“They are front rowers coming off the back field but then they must have the athleticism to score the tries. Selwyn has definitely got that.
“We have been building his engine and having him in a great set of mind. I’ve seen him working hard all throughout the pre-season.
“I can’t wait to watch him develop into the style that we want to play.”
The Broncos travel to Sydney in Round 1 to take on the Roosters at Allianz Stadium on March 6.
