'Childhood dream': David breaks batting record to clinch series win for Australia
Tim David has helped guide Australia to a T20 series victory against the West Indies with the fastest international T20 century by an Australian batter.
The Australians were set a run chase of 215 runs in the 3rd T20 against the West Indies at Warner Park in St. Kitts, with opener Shai Hope managing to score an unbeaten 102 off 57 balls.
The chase started off well for the Aussies, with Glenn Maxwell and Mitch Marsh getting 30 runs within the first two overs, and Australia looked set to win comfortably.
However, by the end of the powerplay, Australia had lost three wickets, with Josh Inglis alongside Maxwell and Marsh departing in quick succession.
This would see David come out earlier than expected.
While he did manage to hit a four off his first ball, he would ease his way into the innings with the next four balls he faced, all being singles.
But from there, David was ballistic with the bat.
He hit 11 sixes and six fours (which included a 28-run over in the ninth) to turn the game on its head and saw him raise the bat for a century in the space of 37 balls.
Alongside his Hobart Hurricanes teammate, Mitch Owen, who contributed a handy 36 not out from 16 balls, the Aussies chased down the total with 23 balls to spare, which sees them claim the series with two games left.
With his innings of 102 not out, David breaks the record for the fastest IT20 century by an Australian batter, beating Josh Inglis’ record from last year by six balls.
It is also the first time that David has scored a century for Australia due to exclusively featuring in the middle order for the national team and rarely getting the opportunity to bat until the back end of the innings.
Speaking with the media after his innings, David found the experience quite surreal and admitted that it would take a little while for the moment to sink in.
“That was pretty good fun,” David said gleefully.
“It’s a little bit surreal at the moment, so it might take a little while to sink in, but I enjoyed it a lot.”
He also noted how satisfied he was to realise a childhood dream by scoring a century, admitting he didn’t know if he would get an opportunity like this.
“I didn’t think I would get the opportunity to score a hundred,” he explained.
“And it is your childhood dream to score a hundred for Australia. So that was definitely in the back of my mind.
“And the position I’ve been playing, I've played a lot of T20 matches now, and I’ve obviously never scored a hundred, so it was a little bit of foreign territory for me for a little bit.
“But I’m just really thankful that I had Mitchy Owen out there with me, who has scored a couple (of hundreds) recently.”
Australia has two more T20 matches against the West Indies before they conclude the series.
The fourth match of the series will again take place at Warner Park in St. Kitts.
The first ball will be bowled at 9am AEST on Sunday.
