Daicos to Tassie? Make him an offer he can't refuse
In a week that has seen the Tassie Devils name Derek Hine as their list boss, Kane Cornes has recommended the AFL’s newcomers make Nick Daicos “an offer he can’t refuse”.
It’s emerged this week that the Devils will have the capacity to offer big name players a sign-on bonus of up to $1 million on top of their contracted salary, in a bid to lure top talent.
It prompted Cornes to question whether a Gary Ablett Jnr Gold Coast-type deal could be done to get someone like Daicos to Tasmania.
“There’s a million-dollar cheque that they have got for this signing bonus,” Cornes said on SEN Fireball. “They can cut it up any way they want.
“Is there a possibility that Tassie could lure Nick Daicos, Gary Ablett Jnr style with an offer he can’t refuse?
“Do you use the million plus the contact to play, so call it two million a season, does he go there for eight years and then come back and finish his career at Collingwood?
“I don’t know if he can wiggle out of his current contract. He wouldn’t be the first to get out of a contract.
“I would have a crack like Gold Coast did with Ablett Jnr and make an offer he cant refuse.”
Given the history of the Daicos name at Collingwood, David King was not convinced it would ever be considered saying that Zak Butters would be the player the Devils should pursue.
“Butters is the one isn’t it? King said. “Surely Nick wouldn’t leave. (The million) is not enough.
“Would it be the best move? Would they be better off getting two players at $500,000 each?”
