Buckaroo confirmed for Cox Plate, bypasses Caulfield Cup
Ozzie Kheir from Buckaroo’s ownership group has confirmed that Buckaroo will not race in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m).
The gelding will race in the $6 million Cox Plate (2040m) instead.
“Unfortunately, we’ll probably wait another week and head towards the Cox Plate with Buckaroo,” Kheir told SENTrack & RSN’s Giddy Up.
“He just probably needs that extra week – it will come in handy for him."
The Chris Waller trained bay ran in the Group 1 Might and Power Stakes (2000m) on Saturday, finishing third in a field of four.
Kheir explained why the seven-year-old was not up to his best last start.
“I think (the ground was too firm), that’s what we’ve put it down to,” Kheir said.
“Obviously, the race pattern didn’t suit.
“We just thought we would give him that extra week because of that ground.”
Buckaroo will run in The Cox Plate on October 18 at Moonee Valley.
Despite the 2024 Underwood Stakes winner missing the Caulfield Cup, Kheir will still have Birdman, Valiant King and Middle Earth potentially running in the Cup.
