"Couldn't have scripted a worse start": How the Hurricanes lost Super Rugby semi-final to Chiefs

Hurricanes assistant coach Cory Jane is left with mixed emotions as his minor-premiership winning team was left answerless to an underdog Chiefs side on Saturday.
The Hurricanes went into the semi-final as the hot favourites after topping the Chiefs both times they faced in the regular season this year. Jane reflected on the game with Scotty & Izzy on SENZ, saying that all it came down to winning the moments.
“It actually would’ve been a great game to review with the boys, even though you're not going to, because we created so many opportunities.
“It was frustrating, the plan was there, but the skill and execution wasn’t good enough,” Jane said.
Although they failed to take their homeground advantage through to the Super Rugby Final, the Hurricanes had their best season since 2016, topping the ladder with 12 wins from 14 games.
Jane said that the development of the players this season is the key to why the team performed so well.
“There was a lot of growth from the team this year, from our pre-season and what we wanted to try and do.
“We got through the season and a lot of these players are starting to understand their game and try and work on it to get better.
“And there is also the growth of the guys that are actually challenging each other, and that's a bit scarce these days, so they challenge each other and get better in meetings and out on the field.
“To kind of run the ship more themselves, and to see that where we were from pre-season to now is an awesome movement in that direction,” Jane told Scotty & Izzy.
With the season now over, Jane, Clark Laidlaw, and the rest of the Canes coaching staff focus switches to the 2025 season, which includes the return of Ardie Savea from his sabbatical in Japan.
