Interim Silver Ferns coach Yvette McCausland-Durie says her focus is on clarity and control as she prepares the team for the upcoming Taini Jamison Trophy series.
Thrust into the role following the sudden exits of Dame Noeline Taurua and Deb Fuller, McCausland-Durie admits it has been a challenging transition.
“It’s a real privilege to have the opportunity to work with these athletes and prepare them for the Test series despite all the challenges and noise that are around it,” she told Sport Nation Afternoons.
The former Central Pulse coach paid tribute to her predecessors.
“Huge respect for Debs (Fuller) and Noels (Taurua) and the work they’ve done.”
McCausland-Durie said her approach is about staying task-driven and composed.
“I guess for me, just compartmentalising where we need to be, understanding our jobs and roles, and working towards it.”
She stressed that pride in the black dress remains the team’s biggest motivator.
“They are hugely aware of the opportunity that they have, and it is a privilege to be in that space, to be wearing the black dress.
Our role is always to uphold and add value to the mana and legacy of the Silver Fern.”
With seven new players in camp, McCausland-Durie acknowledged the added strain of off-court turmoil.
“I guess for me, you just have to put your hand on your heart and say you’re doing the best you can. Not easy when you’re young.”
Still, she praised the resilience of the group.
“They know what they’ve got to do, they are proud of being Silver Ferns, and they want to make sure they do well by that.”
The Ferns face a tough assignment in their three-test series.
“South Africa is no easy feat,” McCausland-Durie said. “You don’t have a choice but to be ready. (I) love these sorts of challenges and can’t wait.”
Despite the disruption, she insists her outlook is one of gratitude.
“I love the ability to work with young people and I love the game. I feel really fortunate to be here.”
The Silver Ferns open their Taini Jamison Trophy campaign against South Africa on Sunday, September 21 at 7:40pm.
