Cobbo's future locked in: Winger will leave the Broncos
This season will be Selwyn Cobbo's last as a Bronco and he will walk out as a Dolphin in 2026.
After weeks of speculation over his future having fallen down the pecking order under Michael Maguire, Cobbo has found a new home with the Broncos' cross-state rivals.
The star winger has agreed to terms on a one-year deal.
Confirming the news, Dolphins CEO Terry Reader said the club is well aware of what Cobbo would bring to the squad.
“The Dolphins have always said we are about continuing to build a roster that will make us one of the top teams in the NRL,” said Reader.
“Selwyn is an accomplished player who has done some amazing things at both Origin and NRL level already.
“But we believe he has untapped potential to go to even greater heights in our game and are excited about what he can do in a Dolphins jersey.”
There had been suggestions Cobbo would depart the Broncos before the June 30 deadline, but he will see out the year under Maguire.
“The Broncos said there is on club you can’t go to early and it’s the Dolphins,” Matty Johns said on SEN 1170.
“If I’m Madge I wouldn’t let Selwyn go early either. You want to have depth in your squad.
“You don’t just let talent like Cobbo walk out the door.”
Cobbo debuted for the Broncos in 2021 and has since scored 30 tries across his 80 games.
He has shouldered enormous expectation with multiple comparisons to NRL great Greg Inglis.
He was reportedly offered a deal to remain at the Broncos but it would have required him accepting a 50% pay cut.
Queensland legend Mal Meninga has been full of praise for the 23-year-old star but suggested he had not adapted well to a life in the spot light.
Speaking on SEN’s The Throwdown this week, Meninga said: “From a player point of view though, there’s a lot of upside to him (Cobbo) and he’s only 23.
“He’s a great athlete and great player. I just think there’s a few issues with the off field.
“He’s not handling the fame all that well I would suggest. He’s got an issue, he’s not in love with he sport and he has to find that passion again to do what he does really well and that is play sport.”
