"Suck it up, toughen up": Cornes unleashes on Blues star

It’s no secret that Carlton is set to make some significant list decisions after another disappointing year, and with a host of names set to exit stage left, there’s one narrative that has infuriated Kane Cornes.
The curious case of Charlie Curnow and whether he requests a trade away from Ikon Park?
The Blues start their 2025 exit interviews today (Tuesday) with Curnow one of the first.
Last month it was reported the 28-year-old wanted a move to the Suns – which was immediately shut down by Michael Voss - and now seems very unlikely given the cap situation at the Queensland outfit.
Now, the Swans have emerged as another possible destination, but it’s the notion of Curnow wanting to leave less than three years into a six-year deal that has drawn he wrath of Cornes.
“I’ve got strong thoughts on this (and) my criticism goes to Charlie,” he said on SEN Breakfast.
“I’m sick of players committing long term and taking the security of a long-term deal and then not even halfway through saying ‘I want out, this is getting hard for me, I want some sun’.
“Curnow in 2022 said, ‘This group started together, we want to grow together and earn success together. This group's mindset is the same as mine’.
“He had a six-year contract extension, three years later – not even – he wants out.
“Don’t sign long term. I’m so sick of it.
“Zach Merrett did, Jake Waterman wasn’t happy with the deal, the clubs buckle and give them more money.
“If I’m Carlton, I’m saying ‘unless it’s Heeney and your first pick, straight swap, you’re staying'. It doesn’t benefit Michael Voss at all unless it is extraordinary to trade Charlie Curnow.
“Suck it up, toughen up, you signed a six-year deal, you wanted security. The minute it gets a little bit hard, they want out, I’m so sick of players doing this.”
While Carlton won’t be playing this September they are no doubt set to make the headlines with Jack Silvagni and Mitch McGovern also rumoured to be part of the exodus.
It follows confirmation that Tom De Koning will move to St Kilda in a mammoth $1.8 million deal over eight years.
