Channel 7 and Kangaroos meet about Cornes ahead of Dogs clash
In a bid to avoid an awkward situation, Channel 7 has met with North Melbourne officials in relation to their Round 17 clash with the Western Bulldogs.
An it centres around SEN’s very own Kane Cornes.
Cornes was banned from the Kangaroos rooms after making disparaging remarks towards the club, its coach Alastair Clarkson and its players, including captain Jy Simpkin and young gun Harry Sheezel.
North’s GM of football Todd Viney took offence to Cornes’ comments, resulting in the outspoken analyst being barred from their rooms during the broadcast of the Round 8 Thursday night meeting with Essendon.
With the name K.Cornes also banned by the Bulldogs - which came to a head last Thursday night with the Luke Beveridge run-in - it presents as a potentially tricky situation for Channel 7’s broadcast at Marvel Stadium in about six weeks’ time.
Channel 9 journalist and SEN regular Tom Morris says a meeting between Channel 7’s Director of Network Sport Chris Jones and Kangaroos powerbrokers Jennifer Watt and president Sonja Hood has taken place in the lead-up.

“Looking ahead to Round 17, North Melbourne v Western Bulldogs, this is a game where Kane isn’t necessarily that welcome,” Morris said on SEN Breakfast.
“That will be North Melbourne’s centenary game, so big celebrations everywhere, activations on the ground, the whole lot. Celebrating 100 years of the club.
“My information is that the head of sport at Channel 7, Chris Jones, invited North Melbourne CEO Jennifer Watt and president Sonja Hood around to his house about two or three weeks ago to break bread and talk about the Kane Cornes ban.
“It was agreed in that meeting that what played out wasn’t ideal and if they were going to do something like that again they would go through a different process.
“How this looks for the Western Bulldogs remains to be seen. But as it stands, North Melbourne doesn’t have a hard or fast rule on whether Kane is allowed to be in the rooms to interview players and people associated with the cub.
“That will play out in the next few weeks but it’s fair to say Channel 7, via Chris Jones, has gone right to the top and he’s broken bread with North Melbourne.”
Garry Lyon asked: “Do you think he needs to go to Viney and Clarkson (instead), or will they get told?
“I think they’re the two you’ve got to get onside.
“Anyway, that game will go ahead irrespective of whether Kane can go down in the rooms of either side. I don’t think it will worry that game itself.”
The Roos v Dogs fixtures at Marvel takes place on Thursday, July 3.
