Last year’s Caulfield Cup (2400m) runner-up Buckaroo is the top weight for this year’s edition of the Group 1 classic.
Trained by Chris Waller, Buckaroo has been assigned 59kg alongside fellow Group 1 winner Light Infantry Man for the October 18 Caulfield Cup.
Buckaroo will this weekend strive to defend his title in Melbourne Racing Club’s SEN Underwood Stakes at Caulfield.
Current race favourite Aeliana, also from the Waller stable, has been allotted 55kg.
Kovalica (57kg) and Bankers Choice (54kg) have already landed a spot in the Caulfield Cup after winning the Q22 and Mornington Cup ballot exempt races respectively.
Moira (57kg), Arapaho (58.5kg), Vauban (58.5) and Lindermann (57.5kg) are some other key names at the top of the order of entry.
Last year’s winner Duke De Sessa won’t run this year due to an injury sustained in August.
“In the Caulfield Cup, Light Infantry Man and Buckaroo are the standout Group 1 weight-for-age performers and carry the highest international rating performance,” said Racing Victoria’s chief handicapper David Hegan.
“Light Infantry Man was decisive in his second win at Group 1 weight-for-age level in the Australian Cup back in March, while Buckaroo easily won the Group 1 Underwood Stakes last year, then finished a head behind Via Sistina in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes and was runner-up in the Caulfield Cup. Both horses are therefore allotted 59kg in the Caulfield Cup, which is the equivalent of weight-for-age.”
