Brownlow Medallist Adam Cooney has named his top 8 for the 2025 AFL season.
The former Dog and Bomber explained why he had each team in their slot from 1 to 8 and even detailed why he has Port Adelaide missing out in 2025.
“I like Port Adelaide, and I have been on the Port bandwagon for many years now, but I've jumped off,” Cooney said on SEN SA The Run Home.
“It's the first year I haven't picked them to go deep in September for about four or five years.
“The succession plan is going to have to be perfect to make it to the end of its tenure … there’s just too much that can go wrong … and they have a few injuries to key defenders, so I’ll leave them out.”
Check out Cooney’s top 8 below.
1 – GWS
“I’ve got the Giants to finish on top,” Cooney said.
2 – Geelong
“The Cats will finish second.”
3 – Collingwood
“The Magpies will have a massive bounce-back to finish third.”
4 – Fremantle
“There are no excuses for the Fremantle Dockers not to finish in the top four this year, even though I’m not sure if Fremantle are fully convinced of that given the situation with Justin Longmuir’s contract.
“But have a look at Fremantle's list, look at their best 18 and tell me where there's a weakness.”
5 – Hawthorn
“I have the Hawks here, they’re an interesting one.
“They could miss the eight with the external pressure being heaped on them this year, they've got some primetime games, and everyone's going to be looking at Hawthorn.
“Can they maintain that cool exterior and have a bit of fun when the pressure's on? They could miss the eight or could go really well.”
6 – Sydney
“I've got the Swans in there. They've reviewed their Grand Finals to an inch of their lives and hopefully, if they don't learn from seven hours of those games, they'll learn nothing in their lives.”
7 – Adelaide
“I have the Crows at seventh. Izak Rankine will be full-time in the midfield, and he’ll finish really high up in the Brownlow. I’ve got him for a top-six finish.”
8 – Brisbane
“This one's hard because it could be the Dogs, it could be the Blues, it could be the Bombers, it could be Port Adelaide, it could be Gold Coast and it could be Brisbane, the premiers from last year.
“I’ve got Brisbane hanging on for this one. I don't want to put them in there, but only because they won it last year, they deserve my respect.
“Brisbane sliding in at eight by the skin of their teeth.”
