Broncos finals hopes shattered after three massive injuries
The Brisbane Broncos premiership hopes have been shattered by injuries to Adam Reynolds, Ezra Mam and Selwyn Cobbo during their 22-2 loss to the Storm.
Disaster struck 22 minutes in when both Reynolds and Mam suffered hamstring injuries in the same play, chasing Xavier Coates who was sprinting downfield.
While Selwyn Cobbo pulled off one of the tackles of the year to stop Coates in the corner, attention quickly turned to the Broncos halves, who immediately went up the tunnel and are expected to be out for 4-6 weeks.
“Unbelievable scenes with both Adam Reynolds & Ezra Mam suffering hamstring injuries on the one play - a turn & chase on Xavier Coates,” NRL Physio wrote on X.
“Both high speed mechanisms & noticeably limping - likely multi-week recoveries incoming & as we’ve seen with other similar cases recently could easily be 4-6 weeks.”
Forced to rearrange their entire side, centre Kotoni Staggs and hooker Ben Hunt moved into the halves, while Jordan Riki shifted to centre.
With 10 minutes to go, Selwyn Cobbo also went down to a hamstring injury, being helped from the field.
The injuries could have dire consequences for the Broncos’ season, with SEN’s Tim Mannah questioning what the injuries could do for their finals push.
“It wasn't their night, the Broncos, you couldn’t have seen that coming,” Mannah told SEN League.
“It left them with an uphill battle, they were so tough.
“Like Madge (Maguire) is going to go in the sheds tonight and be happy with the performance and how tough they were, but he's also not gonna sleep tonight because he's going to know how tough the next few weeks is gonna be and then and what this means for their season.”
The Melbourne Storm were in complete control from the moment Reynolds and Mam left the field, and cruised to victory, but still didn’t appear to play near their best.
“They had 56% of the ball, and they were always in control of the match,” former Storm halfback Brett Kimmorley added on SEN League.
“There's 5 line breaks to 0 in favor of the Melbourne Storm. The concerning thing for (ther Storm), there’s 14 errors from both sides.
“For the Melbourne Storm to make 14 errors, this is the thing I think that’s holding them back over the last few weeks.”
Broncos fans can at least breathe easy about the return of prop Payne Haas, who, in his first game back from injury and illness, played 69 minutes, ran for 152 metres, and made 45 tackles for no misses.
