Brisbane Racing Club celebrates 160 years of racing history at Eagle Farm

This Saturday, August 30, the Brisbane Racing Club will mark a major milestone—160 years of racing at Eagle Farm Racecourse, one of Queensland’s most iconic sporting venues.
Since its establishment in 1865, Eagle Farm has been the beating heart of thoroughbred racing in the state. But its legacy extends far beyond the track.
From wartime service to aviation history and royal visits, the racecourse has played a unique role in shaping Queensland’s cultural and historical identity.
Speaking on Breakfast with Corey Parker and Ian Healy this morning, Brisbane Racing Club CEO Karl deKroo reflected on the significance of the occasion:
“It’s been the home of thoroughbred racing in Queensland since 1865, and nearly for as long as Queensland has been a state. But it’s also been a stage for incredible moments in Australian history—from Bert Hinkler landing on the front straight in 1928 to its role as a military base during WWII. Saturday is a chance to celebrate all of it.”
The 160 Years Raceday will feature a full program of live racing, trackside entertainment, and hospitality experiences, with historical tributes scattered throughout the venue to honour Eagle Farm’s rich past.
“We’ll celebrate great moments of racing,” deKroo added, “but also those historical milestones that have shaped the racecourse and the community around it.”
One of the most iconic racing moments remembered by deKroo was Rough Habit legendary Stradbroke win, ridden by Jimmy Cassidy — a performance that still sends shivers down the spine of racing fans.
