“Bring it back”: Why ex-AFL CEO Demetriou would like to see a nine-point goal introduced
Former AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou thinks the competition should consider introducing a nine-point goal for shots scored from outside 50 metres.
The AFL previously trialled the ‘Super Goal’ in the pre-season competition from 2003 to 2017, with players rewarded with nine points for long bombs instead of the usual six.
The Super Goal existed in the pre-season throughout Demetriou’s entire tenure as the league’s top boss from 2003 to 2014, and he thinks that the introduction of a nine-pointer in the season proper could bring a bit of ‘glitz’ to the game.
Demetriou made the big call while speaking to Gerard Healy on SEN Sportsday, with the Brownlow Medallist asking the former CEO what one thing could make the game better off.

Healy: “If you had to fill in the end of this statement, ‘The game would be much better if…’, what would you go with?”
Demetriou: “That’s a very good question.
“The game would be better if we introduced a nine-point goal from outside 50 metres.”
Healy: “I like it. The long bomb.”
Demetriou: “Try and open up the game, bring back the long kick and the contested mark.
“It was very successful in the pre-season competition.
“We've got three-pointers in basketball. If you were behind by a long way in the last quarter, you'd go for long bombs.
“Bring a bit of glitz back.”
Healy: “Get the torpedo back.
Demetriou: “Bring it back, Gerard, why not?”
Healy’s question to Demetriou came after his co-host Kane Cornes put together a top 10 list of his, ‘The game would be better off if…’
