Rabbitohs star Brandon Smith has arrived at a Queensland court to plead his case on cocaine supply and illegal betting charges.
A huge pack of cameras and journalists greeted the hooker when he arrived "by the skin of his teeth", according to Channel 10 court reporter Matt Johnstone.
"Brandon Smith walked in just by the skin of his teeth, you have to be in the doors by 9am and he turned up at 8:59," Johnstone told SEN's Matt White.
"He had minders with him and he was greeted by 9 media crews. It’s a full house here this morning."
The 29-year-old was charged by Queensland police with one count of supplying dangerous drugs and one count of using or disclosing inside knowledge for betting.
Queensland police allege Smith contacted a drug dealer on the Sunshine Coast in order to supply an illicit drug to Victor Radley and other Roosters teammates on June 7.
Radley has not been charged and there is no evidence to suggest he obtained or took illicit drugs, but a series of damning text messages allegedly sent between the pair have put his future at the Roosters in doubt.
Court documents will allege Radley sent Smith a text saying: “tee-up your cousin in sunny coast for me; little short ball. Short eight-ball if you will.”
Smith allegedly replied: “Yeah, sweet, bro. I will give you the (contact) when I get it.”
Court documents also allege Smith texted a drug dealer numerous times and shared insider information relating to his Souths debut which could have won $20,000 in bets
Paul McGirr, Smith's lawyer, said his client would plead not guilty to all charges.
