The West Indies are remarkably within reach of rewriting the recordbooks at Hagley Oval.
With Justin Greaves (157no) and Kemar Roach (50no) at the crease and the score at 399/6, the tourists head into the final session needing 132 runs to win the first Test.
Reaching the 531 runs needed for victory would crush the previous highest fourth-innings run chase in tests, which currently stands at 418, earned by their predecessors against Australia back in 2003.
The Blackcaps attack has toiled for minimal reward through the second session, ruing a couple of missed opportunities in the field in a pair of dropped catches and a run out squandered.
Greaves and Roach share a seventh-wicket partnership of 130 off 227 bowlers, while Duffy remains the best of the NZ bowlers with figures of 3/103.

Blackcaps edge towards victory as dangerman Hope departs
The Blackcaps have taken big strides towards a first-Test win over the West Indies at Hagley Oval on Saturday.
The critical breakthrough came with Tom Latham's magnificent captain's catch off the bowling of Jacob Duffy to end Shai Hope's defiant stand at 140.
Two overs later, Zac Foulkes trapped Tevin Imlach LBW for just 4, leaving the tourists perilously placed at 294/6 at lunch.

New Zealand will resume needing four more wickets to take a 1-0 series lead.
Duffy's 3/80 leads the way for the NZ attack, while Foulkes, Bracewell and Matt Henry have one apiece.
Blackcaps eye victory as West Indies stand strong
The Blackcaps head into the final day wounded, but within tantalising reach of a first-Test win against the West Indies at Hagley Oval on Saturday.
The West Indies begin play sitting on 212-4, powered by a superb century by Shai Hope (116no).
Hope has been ably supported by Justin Greaves (55no) as part of a critical 140-run stand by the tourists.

Meanwhile, the Blackcaps attack has been compromised by the loss of both Matt Henry and Nathan Smith, making their task on the final day significantly more challenging, as they chase the final six wickets they need to secure a 1-0 series lead.
