Aussie Olympian's Adelaide swansong after retirement news
On the eve of his home state hosting the world beach volleyball world championships, Australian Olympian Zach Schubert has announced his retirement from the sport.
The 29-year-old will compete under the lights in the centre of Adelaide for a last hurrah at the FIVB worlds which get underway this Friday.
Schubert, scheduled to get his campaign under way this Friday against the Netherlands, said finishing up in Adelaide would be the perfect ending to his career.
“It’s going to be special for me,” he said on Instagram. “It will be my last event playing at this level. I can’t wait to share one last tournament here in Adelaide.
“It’s mind blowing to me because this is where is all started for me. Fifteen years ago I played by first game here with Riley and at that event I met my partner.
“We will get married the week after (FIVB).
“Because of beach volleyball 15 years ago I met my wife and I got some unbelievable moments with so many people.”
Schubert will also compete on Sunday and Monday nights against Norway.
“I honestly wish I could play forever,” he added.
“There are obviously so many people I need to thank but I'll do a wrap up post tournament.
“As for now we have some more volleyball to play!”
Ground passes start from as little as $25.
