Australia has two beach volleyball phenoms to cheer for on the road to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Stefie Fejes and Jasmine Fleming became the last remaining Aussies in the womenβs draw at the Beach Volleyball World Championships in Adelaide after surviving a heart-stopping three-set Lucky Loser Round encounter with fellow Australians Georgia Johnson and Lizzie Alchin on Tuesday.
The victory spiked them into the round of 32 where they will face Brazilian veterans Carolina Solberg and Rebecca Cavalcante on Wednesday evening.
βOh, it's amazing,β Fejes said.
βIt's both our debut year in the World Champs. So being able to play against the best teams in the world at the Round of 32 means so much and having the Aussie crowd behind us is really amazing.β
The victory was bittersweet for the pair, with the win in Adelaide bringing the tournament to a screeching halt for training partners and former teammates Johnson and Alchin.
βI mean, I played with Georgia for two years before, and then played with Lizzie for six months last year,β Fleming said
βSo we know each other a bit too well and obviously great friends off-court as well.
βYou know, it is disappointing times to knock each other out in the lucky loser round, but so proud of like where we come as a big team and where we push each other in training.
βSo, you know, difficult game, but happy to be here.β
Toppling the Brazilians will be no easy feat β the South Americans boast a combined 27 years more experience than the Australians.
But Fejes and Fleming have developed some real momentum with consecutive three-set wins and feel like theyβre playing with house money.
I think just building on what our team has brought already,β Fejes said.
βWe've been playing from the best level I think we've ever played individually and as a team, so that's been incredible to see it actually play.
βI think pushing on against the top four teams in the world that we'll hopefully match up against, yeah, that's what we want.β
