The Barmy Army’s Adam Canning is very happy about the fan group’s new song for Steve Smith.
The travelling English fans have peppered the stand-in Aussie skipper with their, ‘Cry on the Telly’, song since 2019, a reference to Smith’s emotional press conference following Sandpapergate.
But now more than 7 years on from the incident in Cape Town, the Barmy Army have found a new way to try and get under Smith’s skin, and that has come through Monty Panesar.
Smith and the former spinner engaged in a war of words ahead of the series, and after clearly taking notice of what Panesar had to say about him, the Barmy Army have re-worded the cult 1994 song ‘Zombie’ by the Cranberries to take aim at Smith.
“I'm a bit past that, to be honest. I think we need to move on from “Cry on the Telly’,” Canning told SEN Breakfast.
“So, we’ve now got, ‘He's in Your Head, Monty!’ for Steve Smith, to the tune of Zombie by the Cranberries.”
The new Smith song is one of many that the Barmy Army will sing throughout the Ashes, and for Canning, his personal favourite is ‘Take The Urn Home’, a favourite which began in the successful 2010/11 tour.
“But I like ‘Take the Urn Home’. It’s a classic from 2010/11 and something we’ve been singing lots on previous tours,” Canning said.
“It has a few different verses that kind of tell the story of the tour, and there'll be various verses added on as we move through the cities.
“So, that's my personal favourite.”
